Innovation and creativity in IP have a very resilient part of the global economy, including Brazil Property, said the director of WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) on the 18th of March. Tang, who served an extensive agenda in Brasilia, business leaders and other government officials brought up lively numbers on IP’s global performance. According to him, in the midst of the pandemic, international patent applications at the WIPO level reached the highest level ever: in 2020 they grew 1.6% and last year 0.9%. The requests for brands in the Madrid system grew by 14%. “The trend is resilient, and another trend in recent decades is that innovation is globalized: seven out of ten IP comes from outside Europe and the US,” he added.
In his talk, the director general of WIPO highlighted the importance of broader participation by society, especially young directors, in the global system of intellectual property. “We need to get IP out of the shadows and into the light,” he said. On April 26, when World IP Day is celebrated, he added, the theme will focus on youth innovating for a better world. “We see this day as an opportunity for young people to discover how IP can help turn their ideas into reality,” he said. “And learn how they can make a living from their inventions and creations, and recognize how IP can make a difference in the causes they passionately care about.”
AB’s president, Gabriel Leonardo, at the event organized by ABPI is a positive sign of Brazil’s importance in the global innovation system. Leonardo highlighted that, in his lecture, the director general of WIPO, as a representative of the United Nations, reiterated his faith in multilateralism. “This is positive because in terms of trends, we have surveys of a global trend, the latest bilateral agreements can generate a decompensation in world trade”.
