ABPI Elects New Board for 2026–2027

On September 30, the Extraordinary General Assembly—presided over by ABPI President Gabriel Leonardos—unanimously elected the members of the Executive Committee and the Council for the 2026–2027 term. The newly elected Executive Committee and Council are scheduled to take office on December 10 at ABPI headquarters in Rio de Janeiro during the Association’s annual year-end gathering.

In brief remarks, ABPI’s President-elect, Peter Eduardo Siemsen, praised the work of the current board under Gabriel Leonardos and underscored the responsibility that comes with the new role. “I thank everyone who, alongside me, accepted this challenge—this remarkable group,” he said, paying tribute to his father, Peter Dirk Siemsen, one of ABPI’s founders. “It is an honor to represent my father’s legacy, which has a strong and enduring history in the Intellectual Property community.”

Gabriel Leonardos wished success to his successor and thanked all the members of his board for their work. “There are so many people working for the association that it almost runs on its own. Thank you for all the support and affection I’ve received over these four years.”

Leonardos recalled his participation on October 3 in Washington, D.C. (USA), during a hearing held by the USTR under Section 301, where he spoke about Brazil’s progress in combating piracy through the coordinated actions of law enforcement and customs authorities, as well as the progress made in reducing the patent backlog at the INPI, especially after 2017. “I explained that if the issue is the alleged lack of action against piracy in Brazil or the delay in examining patent applications, then no additional tariffs should be imposed on Brazil,” he said.
