Illegal trade in Brazil reaps more than 2 million formal jobs a year and accounts for the evasion of a few billion reais, resources that could be used for social projects, pointed out today, 07/30, federal deputy Mariana Carvalho (PSDB-RO ), president of the Mixed Parliamentary Front in Defense of Intellectual Property and Combating Piracy. She was the speaker at the webinar “Combating Piracy and the Draft Laws (PLs) Related to Intellectual Property”, organized by ABPI, with the moderation of the entity’s vice president, Gabriel Leonardos. “There are more than 200 initiatives under way in the Chamber of Deputies to combat piracy and the big challenge is to get these projects off the ground and put them into practice,” said the deputy.

The growth of digital piracy, another point raised by the deputy, grows exponentially. According to her, between August 2015 and August 2016, pirated websites received 17 million in advertising revenue and in the area of subscription TV, the 4.2 million illegal signals account annually for a loss of R $ 9 billion. Applying sanctions to this type of digital piracy is difficult, he explained, because many of these sites are hosted abroad and are not subject to Brazilian law.

The defense of land and sea borders against piracy, said the president of the Parliamentary Front, depends on joint articulation by the Federal Police, Revenue and the Federal Public Ministry. She added that the illegal drug market corresponds to 20% of the more than US $ 10 billion moved by the pharmaceutical industry in Brazil. In the cigarette sector, the illegal trade represents 54% of the total market. For the deputy, the Parliamentary Front is able to expand and make the fight against illegal trade more effective. “We need to convince 513 deputies about the importance of combating piracy,” he said.

ABPI directors Valdir Rocha, Marcio Merkl and Rodrigo Ouro Preto participated in the Webinar, in addition to lawyer Gustavo Morais, partner at Dannemann Siemsen.
