In 2021, the year foreseen for the end of the backlog – patent pending pending examination – INPI 4.0 will emerge, with remote management, digitalized processes, teleworking and more technical decisions. Another good news is that, according to the director of the INPI, “The impact of Covid-1 in the Program to Combat the Backlog of Patents” is practically null, the theme of the webinar, which was attended by the president of ABPI, Luiz Edgard Montaury Pimenta , and mediation by the coordinators of the ABPI Patent Commission, Ana Cristina Müller, Ana Cláudia Mamede Carneiro and José Eduardo Filgueiras. In the area of patents, in the first four months of this year, 8,658 technical decisions were made, against 9,793 in 2019, while in 2020, the average decision time per technical division was reduced to 8.4 years.
The pandemic, which forced the INPI to expand the tele-work regime, according to Liane Lage, will not interfere with the institute’s goal of ending the patent backlog in 2021. The stock reduction does not stop. On August 1, 2018, when the Backlog Combat Program began, INPI’s “backlogometer” indicated 149.92 thousand patent applications pending examination. Nine months later, the number dropped to 112.09 thousand. In the last two months, in the middle of a pandemic, the backlog was reduced by more than 5,000 orders.
