Universities lead patent applications among residents

Public universities came out ahead in the 2020 Brazilian ranking of patents, recently released by the BPTO (Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office). Of the 25 greatest applicants, 19 are public higher education institutions, including residents and non-residents.

The rankings include assets such as Invention Patents, Utility Models, Trademarks, Industrial Designs, and Software and are available on the BPTO portal. Among the Invention Patents, and considering only residents, the leadership is from the Federal University of Campina Grande, with 96 applications, followed by Petrobras (79) and the Federal University of Paraíba (74). Among non-residents, Huawei stands out in first place, followed by Qualcomm and Dow Chemical.
