The Madrid Protocol and the Brazilian Context

The opportunities and challenges of the Madrid Protocol were the focus of discussions on March 15 at the ABPI headquarters in Rio as part of the IP Meetings series organized by ABPI in partnership with the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization), the BPTO (Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office), and the JPO (Japan Patent Office). “The event was specifically designed to offer a comprehensive and accessible overview of the subject, providing an ideal environment for constructive debates and valuable information exchange,” stated Renata Lisboa, a member of ABPI’s Council. “We delved deeply into the procedures, solutions, opportunities, and challenges associated with the use of the Madrid Protocol, with a particular focus on the Brazilian context.”

The event, which attracted over 180 participants, featured Juan Rodriguez, Senior Legal Counsellor at the Madrid Legal Division, Madrid Registry, Brands and Designs Sector of WIPO; Gustavo Novis, in charge of the General Coordination of the Madrid Protocol at the BPTO; Qiangqiang Li, coordinator of Team 4 at the Madrid Operations Division, Madrid Registry, Brands and Designs Sector of WIPO; Benoît Apercé, Communications and Information Manager at the Madrid Information and Promotion Division, Madrid Registry, Brands and Designs Sector of WIPO; Peter Baker, Senior Project Manager in the Madrid Information Systems Division, Information and Communication Technology Department of WIPO; and Clarissa Jaegger, coordinator of ABPI’s Trademarks Study Committee.

The event opened with welcomes to Ayato Sakaki, Consul of Japan in Rio de Janeiro and IP Attaché of the Japan Patent Office (JPO), and Soichi Yoshida, Deputy Administrator of the Information and Promotion Division, Madrid Registry, Brands and Designs Sector of WIPO.
