ABPI participates in a public hearing on the granting of patents
A public hearing is scheduled for March 25th, to guide Senate Bill 437/2018 authored by Senator José Serra (PSDB-SP). The proposal provides for Anvisa’s (Brazilian Health Surveillance Agency) prior consent in assessing the granting of patents and seeks to revoke the possibility of extending the term of patents beyond the regular term of 20 years.
Senator Rogério Carvalho (PT-SE) is the rapporteur of the matter and also the applicant for discussion in the scope of the Science, Technology, Innovation, Communication, and Computing Committee. ABPI met with the senator in September 2019 to discuss the importance of the matter.
According to ABPI representative Gustavo Morais, the public hearing is extremely important. “I intend to defend intellectual property systems and avoid any erosion in them”, he declared.
