In August, ABPI organizes the largest Intellectual Property event in Latin America in Rio de Janeiro

Featuring an opening speech by technology strategist and futurist Crystal Washington, ABPI will host the 43rd International Congress on Intellectual Property, the largest event of its kind in Latin America, from August 20 to 23 in Rio de Janeiro. With the theme “Intellectual Property as a Promoter of Social Equality,” the Congress commemorates ABPI’s 60 years of dedication to intellectual property study and dissemination.

Another highly anticipated guest for the event is Klaus Grabinski, President of the Court of Appeal at the Unified Patent Court. He will be joining Panel 8, scheduled for Tuesday, August 22nd, at 9:30 am, focusing on the theme of “Unified Patent Court.” Grabinski took on the role of UPC President in November of last year, and previously served as Justice at the Federal Court of Justice (Bundesgerichtshof), the Supreme Court of Germany of civil and criminal law matters, acting in patent disputes and other litigation for more than 13 years.

The 43rd Congress, designed to be held in both in-person and online formats, will bring together national and international representatives from various sectors, including industry, judiciary, legal professionals, government officials, as well as directors of companies and entities such as WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization), AIPPI (International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property), ASIPI (Inter-American Association of Intellectual Property), INTA (International Trademark Association), among others.

The event will feature two plenary sessions, 12 panels, and 10 table topics that will gather multidisciplinary experts to engage in discussions on a variety of topics. Some of the main subjects include the economic perspective of innovation, authorial controversies, limitations on physical and virtual advertising, as well as financial and administrative penalties imposed by the Brazilian National Data Protection Agency (ANPD). Moreover, the event will host engaging debates centered around trademarks, patents, industrial design, and the remarkable creations generated by generative AI models such as ChatGPT, MidJourney, DALL·E, and other notable innovations.

Patent of the Year Award
In its 43rd annual Congress, ABPI will proudly announce and present the 4th Patent of the Year Award. This distinguished accolade will honor the best invention dedicated to promoting social inclusion. The award will recognize deferred patent applications or existing patents filed within the Brazilian territory that demonstrate a significant contribution to sustainable economic development.
