The carioca economist Guilherme Benchimol, a speaker on the second day at ABPI’s 42nd International Congress on Intellectual Property, was the protagonist of one of the most successful stories in Brazilian entrepreneurship. In partnership with Marcelo Maisonnave, he created XP Investimentos, today one of the largest brokers in Brazil. Benchimol currently holds the position of Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors.
In May 2001, with an initial capital of around R$ 15 thousand, XP was born operating in the financial education and investment advisory services fields. In 2005, the company created the XP Asset Management and, shortly after, acquired the brokerage firm Americainvest. In 2008, XP entered the insurance area and invested with large institutional investors.
Between 2011 and 2016, XP acquired the financial information portal Infomoney and brokers Interfloat, Senso, Prime, Clear, and Rico. At the end of 2017, Itaú Unibanco (ITUB4) acquired 49.9% of the capital of the XP Group in a transaction worth more than R$ 6 billion. Crowning this journey, in December 2019, XP went public on Nasdaq, the American stock market.
