Singapore candidate wins WIPO election

Singapore’s Daren Tang was elected the new Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). He was chosen among five finalists, in a fierce final dispute with Chinese Wang Binying, currently Deputy Director-General of the organization. The vote was conducted by a Committee made up of 193 members from 83 countries chaired by France. The approval of the new Director-General will be ratified in May by WIPO’s General Assembly, which, however, has never rejected an elected candidate since the creation of the organization in 1967.
